The belief spread in a radiating ring from Ancient Sumer, where it got its start. It is known as ayin horeh in Hebrew; mauvais oeil in France, mal occhio in Italy, bose blick in Germany, droch-shuil in Irland, mal ojo in Spain, baskania in Greece and was known as oculus malus amongst the Romans. The eye is described as a look inspired by maliciousness or envy. Blue glass eye charms are one of most common forms of reflective eye-charm used as apostrophic talismans.

Phoenix

Long a symbol of immortality and rebirth, Ancient Egyptian and Assyrian legends tell of the beautiful Phoenix. The Assyrians describe the immortal bird as a creature that lived on frankincense and fragrant gums. It was a fabulously beautiful bird with gold and reddish-purple feathers, and was as large as or larger than an eagle. After a life span of 500-600 years the Phoenix would build itself a nest of cinnamon, spikenard and myrrh in the branches of an oak, or on the top of a palm tree. Feeling its death approaching, the Phoenix would set its nest on fire, and jumping in to be consumed by the flames, breathed out its last breath amidst the odours. A young Phoenix was reborn from the ashes of its predecessor and lived as long as its parent. After growing up it lifts its nest from the tree and carries it to the city of Helipolis (located northeast of Cairo) in Egypt depositing it in the temple of the Sun.

The legend of the Phoenix is known across many civilizations:

In Japan it is appears as Ho-Ho and announces the coming of a new era.

The Phoenix of the Chinese legend is known as Fung-hwang and is one of the Four Spiritually Endowed presiding over the destinies of China.

Ancient Sumerian, Assyrian, Incan and Aztec mythology all tells of this uniquely immortal bird.

In mythology of ancient Egypt, the Phoenix represented the sun, which dies at night and is reborn in the morning. It is equated with Bennu, the Sun Bird, emblem of Ra.

The long life of the Phoenix, and its dramatic rebirth from its own ashes, made it a symbol of immortality and spiritual rebirth.
